Clinician Conversation Reveals the State of Therapy and Mental Health in America

A panel of two women and two men are in conversation on a stage in front of an audience about the state of mental health in America at SimplePractice headquarters in California

A growing number of Americans need access to quality mental health care, however many clinicians are overwhelmed.

As a practice management and EHR platform used by over 200,000 practitioners, SimplePractice invited a group of mental health thought leaders to share their ideas on how we can address this crisis.

Dr. Thomas Insel, former director of the National Institute of Mental Health and author of Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to Mental Health, spoke with clinicians on October 28 at SimplePractice company headquarters in Santa Monica, California.

Two SimplePractice clinicians with years of experience working directly with communities in Southern California shared their insights and expertise on the panel.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Jennifer Noble has over 20 years of advocacy experience in the mixed-race community. She specializes in adolescence, intersectional identity, and family therapy.

And, clinical psychologist Dr. Connor McClenahan helps professionals in high-stress careers to overcome anxiety so they can make clear decisions and use their time intentionally to make more space for the people and activities they love.

This lively panel discussion is moderated by NPR mental health correspondent Rhitu Chatterjee who guides the conversation, delves into important topics, and holds space for our panelists’ individual and unique voices and points of view.

Chatterjee has reported on and illuminated many complex mental health topics including America’s loneliness epidemic, community resources available for parents in recovery from opioid addiction, and, importantly, the pandemic’s damaging impact on health workers’ mental health.

Watch the full conversation, hosted and introduced by SimplePractice president Jonathan Seltzer.

Following the hour-long panel, in-person clinician attendees—including Dr. Ebony Butler, Barbara Griswold, Dr. Donna Oriowo, and Shani Tran—contribute 30 minutes of live questions and commentary on topics including racial bias in licensing exams, insurance paneling, culturally responsive care, cultural competency, and cultural humility.
